• Frank K. Hain and the Manhattan Railway Company: The Elevated Railway, 1875-1903

Organized under the Rapid Transit Act of 1875, the Manhattan Railway Company (commonly known as the Manhattan Elevated Railway, or the "el") dominated public transportation in late 19th-century New York City. Its four lines extended the length of Manhattan Island into the Bronx, with 334 steam locomotives carrying 1,122 passenger cars over 102 miles of track. From 1880 to 1902, more passengers traveled the el than on any other rapid transit system in the world. Frank K. Hain was vice president and general manager of the company for 16 years, during which time he confronted union organizers, horrifying accidents, and a relentless media crusade for conversion to electric power and the establishment of a subway system. This chronicle of New York's elevated steam railways illuminates an important era in transportation.

  • The History Of The New York City Subway And Elevated Rail / Railway In Photographs And Postcards

The New York City Subway is an exemplar of public transportation in the United States, and even in the world. It is one of the world’s oldest public transit systems, one of the world’s longest subway systems, the largest rapid transit system in the world by number of stations, and furthermore, one of the world’s most-used metro systems. Thousands of tourists and locals ride the trains every day of the year, at every hour of the day. Now an iconic staple of New York City, many New Yorkers cannot even imagine their lives without the subway system. Important Dates: November 1, 1903: During subway construction, people and animals tumble into the open ditch, dogs are made crazy by the explosions, and people complain of “subway’s knee.” September 4, 1904: As construction approaches completion, New Yorkers take greater interest in the subway. October 9, 1904: The New York subway, prior to opening, is lauded as the “greatest thing of its kind” and is expected to solve the city’s transportation problem. November 13, 1904: Health concerns are raised about poor subway ventilation and sanitation, as well as exposure to bacilli. Electricity and fans are proposed as solutions. October 5, 1910: Gimbel Brothers opens a department store in the subway, dubbed the ...

  • Morris Frohmann Against The MAnhattan Railway Company and the NewYork Elevated Railroad Company

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ...I suppose there are more apartments than there are tenants. A great many buildings similar built about that time. There has been about ten built in the street since that time. The supply of the apartments exceeded the demand" (fol. 286). " There were blocks of houses uptown that did not have a tenant, and that came in competition with the apartments in my house " (fol. 297). Any reduction that may be figured out as existing in the rental value of the premises in suit is certainly not to be attributed to the elevated railroad, when the true causes are so manifest, and so thoroughly shown in the records of the trial of this action. The defendants' railroad is shown to be the main cause for the advance in fee values in this vicinity, and it is also positively shown that causes other than the operation of the railroad have depressed the rental values of buildings like plaintiff's house. If due weight had been given to this evidence, a conclusion that plaintiff had suffered either fee or rental damage could not have been reached. From all the evidence in this cas...

  • By the El

This is a handsomely produced paperback of vivid photos and old-timers' reminiscences of the Third Avenue Elevated trains that dominated the skyline of Manhattan and the Bronx. Its 200+ full-color photos are mostly from the years shortly before the El was abandoned in 1953 -- divided between pictures of the trains and stations, and the urban life that teemed under and around them. The pictures show neighborhoods filled with mom-and-pop stores, among them a striking number of bars and pawn shops. Street life is well chronicled, and most East Side landmarks (e.g., the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings) feature prominently. Some of the most dramatic photos show the demolition of the elevated structures. The book will appeal to amateur (and maybe professional) historians of New York city's general history and culture, as well as to railroad and mass-transit buffs. The book has the endorsement of the New York City Transit Museum and The Bronx County Historical Society. (It was the subway and elevated train system that directly led to the development of The Bronx by making the remote borough accessible to the business center of New York, downtown.) Joe Franklin, the venerable nostaglist to whose radio program nearly every New Yorker used to listen faithfully, wrote an introducti...

  • Interborough Rapid Transit: The New York Subway Its Construction and Equipment

In 1903 the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company broke ground on an ambitious project, to create the City of Brotherly Love's first high speed rail system. When it opened on March 4, 1907, the Market Street Subway-Elevated Line was greeted with acclaim. Running from the suburbs of West Philadelphia on elevated tracks, trains ducked underground to reach the city center. The line would be joined by the Frankford Elevated in 1922, and merged into today's Market-Frankford Line, now operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Originally printed in 1907 to celebrate the opening of the subway line, Philadelphia's Rapid Transit include descriptive text, and dozens of rare photos showing the men who built the line. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the construction and design of one of the nation's earliest municipal railway systems. This reprint has been slightly reformatted, but care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
